O espa\u00e7o tem origem no ano de 1854, quando um grupo de pessoas influentes sentia falta de locais para se discutir e fazer arte. Eram pol\u00edticos, jornalistas e pequenos empres\u00e1rios na ent\u00e3o pacata Nossa Senhora do Desterro.<\/p><p>O debate evoluiu at\u00e9 29 de julho de 1857, quando a pedra fundamental do teatro foi lan\u00e7ada. Com falta de recursos, passaram-se 14 anos at\u00e9 a inaugura\u00e7\u00e3o. Em 5 de junho de 1871 foi usado pela primeira vez, mesmo sem estar pronto. Passou por um tempo de abandono, e chegou a funcionar como pris\u00e3o.<\/p><p>Com capacidade para 470 pessoas (sendo 297 lugares na plateia, 110 no balc\u00e3o e demais em camarotes), passou por diversas reformas e restaura\u00e7\u00f5es, principalmente em 1955, 1975, 1984 e 2004. H\u00e1 registros dessas obras em placas na entrada do teatro. Em 1988, foi tomado como Patrim\u00f4nio Hist\u00f3rico Estadual.<\/p><p>Vitrais nas laterais do pr\u00e9dio retratam cenas folcl\u00f3ricas e populares, como o boi-de-mam\u00e3o e o pau-de-fita.
